Chamma Ling Colorado Retreat Center

Chamma Ling Colorado, a retreat center located along the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range near the small town of Crestone, was founded by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche in 2001. Small and large group teaching retreats from the ancient Bon tradition of Tibet are offered throughout the year. Solitary retreat cabins are the primary focus on the center, offering the solo practitioner the powerful experience of stillness, silence, and spaciousness during personal retreats lasting from a week to many months. A beautiful Community House accommodates small retreats and local practice groups at various times of the year.

Our facilities

Chamma Ling of Colorado offers an unmatched retreat experience for practitioners in the Bon tradition, as well as meditators of other spiritual traditions.  Cabins are nestled along the mountain range and offer privacy for deep practice in a space that offers a full kitchen, bathroom with hot shower, bedroom/practice space, hardwood floors, porches with views, good ventilation, heat, and Southwestern stucco exteriors.  Each cabin can be converted into a sealed, dark retreat and attendants can be obtained for meals, cooking, and/or gathering supplies.

Our Retreat Cabins

We currently have four cabins available to rent. The cabins are designed to support either dark retreat or any other form of practice since there are windows on each wall, which may be sealed for dark retreat. The cabins are a passive solar design, using a trombe wall on the south side to absorb heat during the day and radiate it into the cabin during the night. Supplemental radiant heating is available for long cold and cloudy periods.

The bathroom includes a toilet and shower with hot water. The kitchen includes a stove and sink, as well as cabinets for storage. Notably, there is a special pass through door for the caretaker to use for transferring meals to people in dark retreat.

The main living space has a single bed, clothes storage, and a small writing desk with chair. A shrine space is built into one wall, with enough room in front for full length prostrations or physical exercises.

Community House Kitchen

Our first four cabins are clustered together and are connected by a footpath to the parking area. Retreatants have access to the full 51 acres of Chamma Ling’s surrounding property, which border national forest lands that extend across the Sangre de Christo mountain range.

Three of the cabins are nearly identical, and designed for a single person’s use. The fourth cabin is about 30% larger, and includes a double bed, small closet, and a larger kitchen and deck. It is well suited for couples to practice together.
